11 Greatest Dog Dancing Videos

>> Wednesday, April 8, 2009

Why is Musical Dog Sport the greatest of all Dog Sports? According to Wikipedia, musical dog sport, or musical canine freestyle, is "a mixture of obedience, tricks, and dance that allows for creative interaction between dogs and their owners." In other words, it's dancing with your dog. And it's awesome. And it's gaining in popularity. There hasn't been this much ham stuffed into pockets on dancefloors since Steve Wozniak was voted off Dancing With The Stars. Below, we pick the 11 Greatest Dog Dancing Videos. If you can't find room in your heart for these, you must be John Lithgow in some sort of doggy Footloose.

#11. Carolyn Scott & Rookie - "You're The One That I Want"

Carolyn Scott and Rookie are the Gilles and Cheryl of Musical Dog Sport. This is probably the most widely viewed Canine Freestyle video, and is better than Grease 2.

10. Pepper Dancing to "Achy Breaky Heart"

Pepper is actually better looking than many of the girls in the actual "Achy Breaky Heart" video. Definitely a better dancer.

9. Group Dance - "Ghostbusters"

At a certain point, this just devolves into barking and chaos. Much like Ghostbusters II.

8. Gladiator Dog

Points deducted purely because real gladiators didn't wear aqua t-shirts from Old Navy.

7. Charlie Chaplin Dog Dance

Attila and Fly are back, this time un-Gladiatored and all Little Tramped up. Unfortunately, after this performance, Fly was accused of harboring Communist sympathies, and moved to Switzerland. He made a triumphant return to the U.S. to tearfully accept a 1972 Honorary Purina Golden Paws award.

6. Carolyn Scott And Rookie - "Boogie Woogie Choo Choo Train"

More Carolyn and Rookie. We would love to see a Pretty Woman-esque musical montage of Carolyn trying on her different dog dancing outfits.

5. Carina And Tucson - "Macarena"

You can always tell a dance craze is over when dogs start doing it. Still, Carina and Tucson ride an early wave of mid-90s nostalgia straight into our hearts.

4. Whisper Performing Canine Freestyle To "Lord Of The Rings"

Where's an Orc when you need one?

3. Dante Freestyle

Dante comes in number 3 on the strength of a pretty rockin' ponytail.

2. Emily And Henrietta

Emily's hot. Drawback: Putting up with all the dog dancing.

1. Pam Martin And Pilot - "Word Up"

They may not have the slick showmanship of Dante, or the road-tested technique of Carolyn and Roookie, but Pam and Pilot take the number one spot due to their contagious joy and their love of Cameo. Honestly, we probably would have given first to Pam, even if she was dancing without the dog.
