Disturbing Yodeling Dogs Actually Cheerful Family Entertainment

>> Thursday, May 7, 2009

This is a real thing that actually happened. The above clip is from Heidi 4 Paws, a reimagining of Heidi starring talking dogs. It aired in December on PBS stations. If you have children who enjoy dogs, or talking dogs, or hallucinogenic drugs, this is the movie for them.

Is it just us, or do these clips become more transfixing the more you watch? There is something hypnotic about the 4 Paws gang. Of course, we're high. Speaking of high:

I'll say this, these dogs certainly have a healthier sheen than Little Steven.

Director Holly Goldberg Sloan wrote about her experience in the Huffington Post, and she has a funny, self-deprecating attitude about her obsessive quest to finish her yodeling-dog labor of love. It's not like she thinks she made Schindler's List with talking animals (although we'd like to suggest that for a future project.) And the LA Times gave Heidi 4 Paws an amusingly befuddled, yet positive, review, in which they point out that even the goats are played by dogs. Also: Richard Kind does a voice. Richard Kind! We couldn't find a clip with Richard Kind, so you'll have to settle for Angela Lansbury-dog teaching Heidi-dog to read.

This is how we imagine the world looked to Hunter Thompson.

Okay, we've talked ourselves into it. Heidi 4 Paws looks like the most adorable fever dream we've ever had. We totally want to order a copy. And score some shrooms. This movie should come with shrooms shrink-wrapped to the DVD cover. Consider that a ringing endorsement.
